Emergency life or death situations must be evaluated through problem solving skills so that the person has the best chance of survival. Emergency situations can be quite complicated, especially when there are more severely injured people than EMTs and paramedics. The EMT paramedic must place a census on each patient, including which one is in need of the most urgent help and is it possible to save them. For example, if one person would take approximately twenty minutes for the paramedic to revive and save, while others would take one to two minutes, depending on their severity, some of the quicker patients may come first. The paramedic must be able to evaluate the situation and determine in what way would they be able to save the most amount of people? Many times the most severe wounds and injuries will be treated first because the other less severe injuries can wait for more emergency personnel to show up or until the paramedic is finished.

The majority of the times, EMT paramedics only have one or two patients to take care of, and their responsibility is to do what they can to keep them alive and breathing until they get to the hospital. This may include revitalizing, providing oxygen, patching wounds to stop bleeding, and providing medication to the patient. In these situations paramedics must use problem solving skills to evaluate the individual’s situation and what would be best for them. They will also have to find alternative methods or medications if the patient is allergic to the traditional uses.

An EMT paramedic’s career consists of responding to emergencies and since each emergency is different and unplanned, problem solving skills are needed almost every time a paramedic is called to a scene. To be able to have the advanced problem solving skills needed, many EMT paramedic schools with require high advanced math classes, such as calculus. Some EMT paramedic programs will even include specific problem solving classes that will allow the students to interactively and physically problem solve, instead of just mentally. By the time a paramedic student graduates, their problem solving skills should be high, but the student will still need to leave room for improvement. Throughout an EMT paramedics career, the paramedic will learn how to quickly problem solve in a variety of situations, and unfortunately, this may include making mistakes, but there should always be someone else there to catch the mistakes so they do not endanger anyone.

An EMT is exposed to high stress emergency situations every single day, usually more than once a day.  Every now and then, an EMT may just feel like giving up or breaking down because of the extreme levels of stress, but because they are trained to be emotionally stable, they are able to put their emotions together to stay strong and do their job.  Unfortunately, EMTs sometimes experience death of patients, and they have to cope with the fact that there was nothing they could do.  They cannot dwell on it or beat themselves up for it, or they will not be able to perform at their highest level.  The best thing an EMT can do in this situation is stay emotionally stable, learn from what happened, and try to make use of the situation in the future.

By staying emotionally stable and calm during an emergency, it will not only allow the EMT to accomplish more, but it will allow them to perform at higher levels in their job.  EMTs must be emotionally stable enough to stay calm in a crisis situation because that is what is going to allow them to evaluate the situation, think clearly, problem solve, and save lives.  An EMT cannot do his or her job with emotional instability.  There can be two different scenarios where an EMT needs to be stable.  One is on the scene of an emergency when there are many people who are in need of care and when you cannot help them all, or when someone in the EMT’s care passes away.  The other type is related to their personal life.  An EMT must come to work with a clear mind and not have anything that is distracting them.  An EMT should be able to put their emotional baggage aside and not think about when they are working, it will only make the job more stressful and they will not be able to think as clearly.

To be able to eliminate emotional instability in EMT students, some EMT programs go to extreme extent.  Emotionally stability classes are provided at many EMT schools to prepare the future EMTs for stressful and emotional situations.  These classes may try to apply real life scenarios to an EMT student’s life and see how they can stay calm and react with the correct response.  It takes a lot of training to be able to be emotionally stable, and EMT schools provide students with the tools they need to control their emotions and keep them separate from work.
